Discursive Acts: African American Art at UD and Beyond brings into dialogue selections from UD collections, including the Paul R. Jones Collection of African American art, with individual and institutional loans. This is the first exhibition curated by Dr. Julie McGee, newly appointed curator of African American Art. It will be on view in Mechanical Hall on the University of Delaware campus from October 1 - December 7, 2008.
Discursive Arts takes as its premise the educational and visual power of aesthetic interchanges. Works are placed in visual conversations that raise several themes, including aspiration, beauty, history and representations of blackness. Juxtaposition of divergent imagery and histories illustrates the connective tissues that bind them beyond the exhibition space. Romare Bearden, Charles White, David Driskell, Keith Morrison, Joyce Scott, Lorna Simpson, Jack Whitten and Kevin Cole are among the artists represented. | | 'Banned and Recovered': Depictions of books

The list of banned and censored books is long and storied, but there are more than a few surprises in the "Banned and Recovered: Artists Respond to Censorship" show. Sure, Henry Miller's "Tropic of Cancer" is a little racy, as is the work of the Marquis de Sade, but Mark Twain? Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"? "Aesop's Fables"? The Harry Potter series? The American Heritage Dictionary?

The exhibition has a simple premise: Artists illustrate one or more of their favorite banned books. The works, which came from book and multimedia artists, take a variety of forms, from a reworked edition of the book itself to sculptures, video and paintings.
"Think of an interesting book, and there's a good chance it will have been banned or challenged by a school board," says Steve Woodall, artistic director of the San Francisco Center for the Book, one of the show's two venues. | |

Rodney Ewing: Public Safety
Gallery Reception Thursday June 05, 2008 6:00 - 9:00pm Live DJ set by DJ Nomadeeq
Rodney Ewing, "Xibalba," 2007. Dry pigment and permanent marker on paper, 59 x 42 in.
Frey Norris Gallery presents Rodney Ewing’s first exhibition with the gallery, Public Safety, comprised of three thematic series that will display throughout our space: Disarm, Countermeasures and Meditations. Public Safety examines devices and methods ostensibly designed to protect citizens. Ewing re-structures them as tools that might provide an alternative kind of security, tools that subvert the original intentions of the represented objects’ creators. The redesigning of these instruments and re-application of these techniques will appear as cable-hung and wall mounted images, light boxes and installations. Additional event: On Saturday, June 14th at 4:00 in the afternoon, Ewing will offer a slide presentation and gallery talk that will examine popular media discourse on issues around public safety (and the anxieties that fuel them and attempts to mitigate them) and how these intersect with his artwork and studio practice. This event is free and open to the general public.

Linguists define code-switching as an alternation between two or more languages within a single conversation between people who have one or more language in common.
What this means for most of us is that we participate in, and practice a type of verbal syntactic shape-shifting, frequently changing terms of speech and expression to accommodate the fluctuating needs of discourse within different social and cultural interactions. Often an unconscious act, code-switching is used for many purposes, including protection, identification, recognition, approval, and control.
With this exhibition, Quorum artists address these aspects of code-switching, exploring when and where the switch occurs and why the switch happens. ..............

| | Days and Occassions Installation: Project Space
In his installation, Ewing has recorded certain experiences as they occur between the seconds, minutes, hours, and days. The title of this work "Days and Occasions" is borrowed from a collection of poems by Octavio Paz.
